Alvaro Siza Vieira was born at Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933. He studied at the Escola Superior di Belas Artes do Porto, under Fernando Tàvora, with whom he worked after graduating, until 1958. He taught at the Faculty of Architecture in Porto University, he has received numerous honours and he has taken part in numerous international exhibitions. He has built prestigious works such as the Portuguese pavilion at the Lisbon Expo in 1998,the Weather Centre at the Olympic Village in Barcelona, the Porto Museum of Modern Art.

José SaramagoJosé Saramago was born at Azinhaga, Portugal, in 1922. Of humble origins in 1947 he wrote his first novel and in the 1960s Saramago became one of the country’s most-read critics. In 1966 he published his first collection of poetry, Possible Poems. He wrote poetry, news reports, plays, short stories and novels but it was with Memorial of the Convent that he achieved wider success. The ’90s established his name internationally, he has received many prizes and honours and, in 1998, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
