Toyo Ito was born in Japan in 1941 and graduated at Tokyo University in 1965. He opened his own architectural practice in Tokyo in 1971 and in 1979 he founded Toyo Ito & Associates. He is honorary professor at the University of North London and he has received honours and prizes all over the world. Among his projects should be mentioned: the House of the Architect for the “Silver Hut” in Tokyo. the Salubrious Future Pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, and the Sendai Mediatheque Cultural Centre in Sendai.

Naghib Mahfouz was born in al-Gamaliyya, a poor district of Cairo, in 1912, in 1930 he enrolled at the Department of Philosophy in Cairo University and while he was still a student he began writing short stories for magazines. He graduated in 1934. In 1954 was artistic director at the Ministry for Culture and later director of the Cinema Museum. In 1957 he received the State Prize for Literature and in 1988 he was awarded the Nobel Prize, first Arab writer to receive this honor.
